Lori Pensini
I am essentially a storyteller, drawn to the retelling of my lived and ancestral narratives of inhabiting the rural Australian landscape. The exploration of the relationship between wo(man) and land, and the shaping of both - both constructive & ruinous is a constant thread and deliberation of my art practise. Nature-Culture drives a continuous curiosity and exploratory heartbeat with current themes opening up conversations around conservation and regenerative environmental alignment.
For most part I work with conventional oil linen mediums of narrative figures in a mix of landscapes or botanical imagery with a special focus on endemic Western Australian flora and fauna. The botanical elements in my work are used as a reflection of personal transformations. They link key positive personality traits of people with researched ecological characteristics of botanicals to create a distinctive 'language of flowers' as a way of dually expressing inner strengths/virtues. They also seek to create a narrative around our cultural identity and role within our natural world, especially in the terms of reconnection and well being.
In recent workings I have extended Nature-Culture concepts to include installations of found flora, fauna and composite earthen raw materials. Repurposing natural forms found in our farm bushland aids in creating contemporary depth to the painted themes. Regenerating storylines using natural resources seeks to examine the concept of placement. Firstly, self placement within family culture, who am I? who has shaped me? and the environmental imprinting influencing ones bearing and identity.
I am a nationally recognised artist. I have held 30 solo exhibitions to date and been shortlisted for over 105 awards, including winning the Kilgour Prize, Toni Finni Lester Prize, Perth Royal Landscape Award & The Jury Prize.
