Tess McOnie

More comfortable using a brush and canvas than words to express herself, Tessa has always had an innate fascination with people and portraiture, subliminally coaxing the viewer to perceive the ‘other’ in a new light. Her love of painting Indigenous people came to fruition after she was invited into the Mowanjum Community (Worrorra, Ngarinyin and Wunumbal people) a community in far north WA. Through her art Tessa seeks a kind of ‘subjective truth’ and goes to great lengths to engage and connect with her subject’s essence. – “When a person’s essence is laid bare on a canvas, our differences melt away and our shared humanity shines through.”
